Hyundai Hwarang presents “Voyage within Space”, a solo exhibition of Lee Bongreal from October 25th to November 26th. Lee Bongreal(b.1937) enrolled at the painting department of Seoul National University in 1957 and received a prize at the National Art Exhibition in 1961 at an early age. In 1972, Lee received the ‘recommended artist’ prize at the National Art Exhibition and also served as a member of the jury for the National Art Exhibition for many years.

While studying abroad in Paris in the 1970s, Lee Bongreal was inspired by the Korean window patterns. Naturally, he became interested in ‘grid patterns’ based on geometric divisions and began to create constructive-abstract works. In the 1980s, Lee gradually broke away from grid patterns and attempted to create works that deconstruct the grid. In the 1990s, 2000s and to this day, Lee continues his artistic spirit with works that are completely devoid of grid but show unification of the artist and the canvas.

“Voyage within Space” is Lee Bongreal’s seventh exhibition since his first solo exhibition in 1968. Including Lee’s grid works from the 1970s, lyrical geometric abstract works from the 1980s, works created after 1990s and recent works which erase any remains within the canvas, the exhibition is expected to be a meaningful experience to examine Lee’s oeuvre in one place.
